Acs Sales SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) SEO is a buzz term on the web for preparing your site for submission to the Search Engines and Directories. The idea is that you optimize your site to achieve the highest ranking possible once you have been listed. Different Search Engines have different rules and criteria that they apply to their search results. I have put together some strategies that are common to the main search engines.
Here are some top tips to ensure your site maximizes all the hard work you have put into getting your site listed in the first place.
- Make URLs Search Engine Friendly. Most Search Engines don't like (and won't list) URLs with dynamically generated characters such as ? and & - so try to make sure that the main pages of your site are static and can successfully be crawled.
- Use of Frames. Frames were until a short time ago a no-no for getting your site listed in the Search Engines though this isn't such a problem nowadays. The two big crawlers of Google and Inktomi will both index sites with frames.
- Make a Crawler Page. From your main index page it is a good idea to have a link to your Site Map. This is a page that lists all the pages that are on your site, including any that are free-standing and not otherwise linked. This will allow a Search Engine Crawler that finds your main page to burrow down into these deeper links and index your whole site.
- Create a robots.txt Page. A robots.txt page tells the Search Engines Robot crawler which directories are allowed to be indexed on your site. It is useful for excluding directories, for instance your site's graphics directory. As the main Search Engine crawlers will all look for a robots.txt file it is best to have one. Just create a blank text file and name it "robots.txt" and place it in your root directory. This will allow all pages and directories to be indexed on your site and the robotic cawler won't grind to a halt because it can't find it.
- Submit your site by hand. When you've optimized your site and put in place all the neccessary files it's time to submit your site to the Search Engines and Directories. I recommend you do this manually. If you follow the advice given in these pages you will see that this isn't such a big chore as is made out by many of the "paid for" submission services. By concentrating on the top traffic producers you can limit the amount of time you spend promoting your site and maximise your return on the investment of your time.
- Consider paying for listings. Search engines that charge for your listing and produce "paid for" results are common. The best thing to do would be to run a test investment and see if the returns justify the expense.
